About this treatment

A precise way to reshape a smile.

Veneers are often described as cosmetic, which is true, but it undersells what they actually do. A well-made set of veneers brings a smile back into proportion: tooth length, tooth width, the line of light across the front of the mouth. Done carefully, the result is the version of your own face you've always recognized.

Veneers were first made for film actors in the 1930s, who needed a way to brighten and even out a smile for the camera without altering bite or function. The principle is the same today. A thin shell covers the visible face of a tooth. The tooth underneath stays largely intact. The change is on the surface, where it shows.

The reasons people choose veneers vary. Some are restoring a smile after years of small chips and stains. Others want to balance one tooth that's always sat a fraction too short, or close the small gap a brace would over-correct. A few want a complete reset, eight or ten teeth done together so the front of the mouth reads as one piece. All of these are reasonable. None of them are vain.

What to expect

A quiet process, two visits apart.

Veneers are not a same-day procedure, and they shouldn't be. The first visit is for measurements, photographs, and the conversation about what you actually want. Your dentist talks you through what's possible and what isn't, and a temporary set is fitted while the final veneers are made in a laboratory.

The second visit, usually a week or two later, is when the finished veneers are bonded into place. From there, recovery is gentle. There may be a few days of sensitivity, easily managed, and an aftercare check at six weeks to confirm everything has settled.

Time on site
A few days, twice
Some people choose to travel for two short visits a week or two apart. Others combine them into one longer stay.
Recovery
Gentle, brief
A few days of mild sensitivity is normal. You can eat, talk, and travel home the same day as the fitting.
Longevity
Years, with care
Modern veneers, well-bonded and well-maintained, are designed to last more than a decade. Your dentist will advise you on care.
